Aniwar Mamat (b.1962, Xinjiang Province, China) is an abstract artist, known for his captivating works that draw on roots from traditional Uyghur culture and reimagine with Mamat’s language of abstraction. Born in the oasis town of Kargilik in China’s Xinjiang region, he studied at the Tianjin Institute of Art and Design before graduating from the Central Institute of National Minorities in Beijing. Mamat works across oil painting and tapestry using traditional Uyghur felting techniques, engaging with a dialogue between craft practices and contemporary modes of expression.
Mamat has held exhibitions internationally including China, USA, Italy, Paris, Singapore, and Germany. Notably, he exhibited in the 1st Xinjiang International Art Biennale, Urumqi (2014) and ‘Decorum: Carpets and Tapestries by Artists’, jointly organized by the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Shanghai Power Station of Art (2014). His works are in the collections of major institutions, including the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; Tng Corporation, Montreal; US Department of State, and UBS Bank Art Collection, Zurich.
