Jin Sha (b.1968, Beijing, China) currently lives and works in Beijing. He is a leading figure in contemporary Chinese ink painting. Jin graduated from the Chinese Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA). His paintings showcase the artist’s flawless signature style: a perfection of realistic painting techniques of linear perspective and three-dimensional modelling often found in Renaissance oil and tempera painting. Jin achieved this effect by using ink and watercolour gongbi brushwork on silk, China’s most conservative and most difficult brush technique, characterised by combining fine lines with multiple layers of both ink-shadings and colours to achieve its three-dimensional qualities. In his painting, Jin often imaginatively preserved the subjects’ attire and eliminated their original faces and figures, leaving his viewers to imagine corresponding contemporary alternatives.
Jin has had numerous solo exhibitions in China and Japan, and his works were shown frequently in group exhibitions of Gong-bi art at the National Art Museum of China in Beijing.
