Xia Hang (b.1978, Shenyang, China) graduated from the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts before completing a Master of Fine Arts in the sculpture department of the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. He is a pioneer in adapting the concept of play to his monumental steel sculptures that are made up of small, mechanical parts. Inspired by toys and cartoons of his childhood, including the Transformers franchise, Xia creates dynamic sculptures that sometimes come in multiple configurations, inviting people to interact with his art.
Xia has exhibited widely across China and participated in group exhibitions that toured internationally, including Sculpture by the Sea on Bondi Beach in 2017, and has been commissioned to create a major public artwork for TWT Property Group in Sydney. His work was collected by the White Rabbit Gallery.
