Zhang Shuo (b. 1992, Beijing) graduated from the Stage Design Department of the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in 2024. In the same year, she began her Master of Fine Arts studies at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, where she was awarded the CAFA Academic Scholarship for the 2024–2025 academic year.
Zhang’s work brings together the traditional Eastern painting medium of silk with themes from Western classical tragedy, creating a cross-cultural dialogue between the material qualities of silk and the humanistic depth of Renaissance drama. Her works embody the delicacy inherent to silk while carrying the spiritual core of the four great tragedies. Through a “suspended mounting” technique that allows light to pass through the silk’s translucent fibers, Zhang creates a semi-transparent visual field that echoes the cognitive tension between truth’s emergence and its inaccessibility — constructing a psychological labyrinth within the gray zones of perception.
