Chen Wenling (b.1969, Fujian, China) is one of the most globally acclaimed contemporary sculptors. He has achieved international fame from the late 1990s with his characteristic ‘Red Memory’ series of sculptures featuring oversized, riotously laughing, naked boy figures rendered in shiny, bright red vehicle Duco. Chen’s satirical work draws from a range of influences, in particular the work of Auguste Rodin, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dalí, and Fernando Botero.
Chen’s current practice focuses on a cast of grotesque, perverse figures. Game is a sculpture of two emaciated young boys, a small one hugging knees on top of a bigger boy doing a headstand. Chen uses his signature monochrome red to colour Game.
