Tao Aimin

陶艾民

Born in 1974 in Hunan, Tao Aimin currently lives and works in Beijing.

Tao Aimin’s work employs an anthropological perspective and aims to explore the personal histories and daily lives of women in rural China, giving voice to the unexpressed and undocumented experiences on the verge of being forgotten. Tao works across media often combining found objects, with calligraphy and painting, moving fluently between the languages of traditional and contemporary art, and elite and popular cultures.

Tao Aimin graduated from the Fine Arts Department of National Huaqiao University, Fujian in 1999, where she studied ink painting. She completed the teaching assistant course in the Mural Painting Department of Beijing’s prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2001.

She has previously exhibited in World Art Museum of China Millennium Monument (2005, 2006, 2011), National Art Museum of China (2009), Today Art Museum (2008, 2010), Sakshi Gallery, Taipei (2009), Ink Studio (2014, 2019) and Tai Kwun Contemporary, Hong Kong (2021). Most recently, her work has been included in ‘Stepping Out: Female Identities in Contemporary Chinese Art’ at the Lillehammer Museum, Norway (2022), GL Strand Copenhagen, Denmark  (2022/2023) and Museum der Moderne, Salzburg, Austria (2023).
