Born in 1974 in Hunan, Tao Aimin currently lives and works in Beijing.
Tao Aimin’s work combines the use of ready-made products and folk art techniques and involves painting, calligraphy, rubbing, video, installation, and other categories. Her works move fluently between elite and popular culture and between the languages of traditional and contemporary art. She has profound and delicate thoughts on issues such as the right to artistic creation, artistic self-expression, labor, physical experience, and collective memory.
She has been nominated for the International Fine Arts Foundation’s Xiao Shufang Art Nomination Award (2008) and Artist of the Year in the Multimedia Installation category of AAC Art China (2009). Her art work has been selected as one of the 30 Most influential Installations of Chinese Contemporary Art (2016)
Tao Aimin’s works have participated in more than 60 exhibitions in the past 20 years, including New South Wales Museum of Art, Australia (2023), Lillehammer Kunstmuseum, Norway, Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Austria (2023), Tai Kwun Art Museum, Hong Kong (2021), Haus am lutzowplatz, Berlin, Germany (2020), Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Istanbul (2013), Leonard Pearlstein Gallery, Drexel University, Philadelphia (2011), National Art Museum of China, Beijing (2009), the Deborah Colton Gallery, Houston (2007), as well as the North Jutland Art Museum, Aalborg, Danmark (2005).
