This is the first exhibition by contemporary Chinese women artists in Australia. It presents works by nine established and emerging female artists. Sworn Sisters displays artworks in a variety of media by women artists who have played important roles in the development of contemporary Chinese art.
The title of this exhibition is an indirect translation from the Chinese Nüshu 女书, which means literally, women’s writing. It is a syllabic script derived from Chinese characters that were used exclusively among women in the Hunan province of southern China, possibly from the 13th century onwards.
Sworn Sisters aims to challenge stereotypes of Chinese women. Each featured artist brings a unique perspective to the question of what is a modern woman in China. Collectively, they represent Chinese women‘s responses to a society which is rapidly transforming itself economically, socially, and culturally.
